We have started on the construction of a new garden near Grantham in Lincolnshire – just in time for the rain! The associated property, an old stone barn, is still under development so the initial garden works will be limited to refurbishment of the old stone boundary wall. The main garden works are scheduled to be undertakne over the summer in readiness for planting in the autumn. The team onsite can look forward to fabulous views and, hopefully, some sunshine!

The idea of the garden being an outdoor room has been around for many years but has perhaps never been as relevant as it is today. The ever-increasing pace of life and growing house prices are just two reasons for making the most of our outdoor space, while new products have broadened the possibilities.

When it comes to integrating your house and garden the first crucial step is realising that a garden need not just be about plants and gardening. Plants may well be the special ingredient, but the principal point is that a garden should be a space designed to be used and enjoyed by people.

How you choose to use your garden will depend on your lifestyle and your house, but the best way to integrate house and garden is to create strong links between the two, both visual and practical.

Visually this can be done by continuing a style, or material, from the house into the garden, or by subtly lighting focal points or specimen plants, to bring the garden alive both at night and in winter. Maximising the amount of glazing, and particularly floor to ceiling glazing, will dramatically enhance the connection with your outdoor space, with light flooding in and plants flowing right up to the house.

From a practical point of view, it is about maximising accessibility. Movement needs to flow into the garden with the ease of one room to another and so, for instance, tables and chairs should always be offset away from the paths and doors.

It is worth bearing in mind that our homes are designed with human scale in mind and continuing this relationship into garden, by the use of overhead structure such as canopies, trees or pergolas and dividing space with hedges and walls, will create a comfortable transitional space into the garden. Getting it right should prove well worth the time and effort.

We designed a constructed a garden near Newark last autumn and look forward to seeing how it grows on this year. The site was a blank canvas that benefited from lovely views across the Witham valley. The owners wanted a garden with a contemporary feel and that was principally for relaxation. A couple of features where also incorporated to allow the garden to be used for exercising – a pull-up bar, a wall bar for hanging leg lifts and bench style seating for bench dips – which were designed to fit subtly into the garden scene. Here is an image of the garden design plan and a ‘before’ photo. Photos of the garden after planting are in the next blog and we will add a few later in the summer to show the garden one year one.

Scotland may have had its wettest winter for a century but water reserves in much of the rest of the country are at lower levels than in 1976, one of the worst drought years of the twentieth century. The Environment Agency’s drought map shows the East Midlands at high risk, and while the debate continues about how best to deal with the problem, it is clear that we all need to use less.

Gardens, of course, suffer during dry periods in Spring and Summer and, particularly, with the implementation of hosepipe bans. There are however plenty of things that we can do to reduce the strain on our plants. Here are some tips to help you plan ahead for the long, hot summer:-

The right plants in the right place – plants vary considerably in the amount of water they require to thrive. The foliage of plants can provide some indication of a plants tolerance to drought, for instance the small, grey leaves, associated with mediterranean plants such as lavender, santolina and potentilla, are designed to reduce water loss through transpiration.

Shelter belt – wind sucks the moisture out of plants so providing shelter, for instance with hedges, can be beneficial particularly on exposed sites.

Soil condition – Some soil types are very free draining, for instance sandy soils, and therefore do not retain sufficient levels of moisture for plants. On the other hand heavy clay soil can inhibit a plants ability to develop good root systems. Digging organic matter, such as manure, into both these types of soil will help root development and moisture retention.

Lawns – these are often the part of the garden that shows the most visble signs of water stress, as they have fairly high moisture needs. Consider therefore how much lawn you really need or want when planning your garden. When the dry weather kicks raise the cutting height of your mower, as short grass will suffer more.

Water harvesting – There maybe some things that you will want to keeping watering throughout summer, such as planters or vegetables, and for these, water-butts can be useful. The roof on an average-sized house will, in normal years, yield around 3000 litres of rainwater in July, so even sheds and greenhouses are worth harvesting.

Water well – Watering in the evening will mean less moisture is lost to evaporation and watering thoroughly (a good soaking occasionally is better than little and often) will ensure a deep soaking which, again, will reduce evaporation. Deep watering will also encourage plant roots to grow downwards, which will enable them to tap into deeper reserves. To avoid runoff when watering, shallow wells can be scooped around the base of plants.

Mulching and weeding – A good layer of mulch, such as bark or gravel, will greatly reduce evaporation. It will also reduce the amount of weeds competing with your plants.

You never know though, we might be in for a short, wet summer for a change.

It is an unusual site in that steep slopes up and away from the house on two sides make it feel like an amphitheatre. It makes for an interesting garden with great possibilities for terracing, steps and a water cascade to take advantage of gravity. Here is a cross section of the initial outline design proposal and a picture of the site as it is now which gives a good idea of the challenges involved. The project will most likely be undertaken in stages but hopefully we should be able to post a progress report in the near future.

It is a lovely enclosed space flanked on one side by a contemporary extension with a glass wall that provides great views from inside and works brilliantly to tie the two spaces together. We have been meaning to post these pictures for a while, but its nice to do so now, when we are in the grip of a very cold, wintery, spell, to remind us what we have to look forward to in the summer.
